This course focuses on internal and external project evaluation and presents how these tools are used to measure and improve the results of a project. The course provides a step-by-step guide on how to design and to perform an evaluation, according to your specific needs and expectations.

After reviewing key management issues required to design an evaluation plan (i.e. Results-Based Management and Project Cycle Management), participants are introduced to the main concepts in the field of project evaluation (i.e. evaluation founding principles, types and criteria).

The course then presents the phases and the steps of the evaluation process. Specific focus of the design phase is given to the definition of the evaluation questions, the identification of the resources required to perform it, the reasons leading to the choice of an external or/and internal evaluator, and finally the presentation of key methods to collect data.

As per the second phase, the conduction of the evaluation, participants learn how to organise the procedures for data collection, how to process and analysis data, and how to formulate recommendations that are feasible to implement.

Finally, participants learn how to organise the activities related to the communication and sharing of the findings of the evaluation, as well as to understand how to incorporate in the project documents the corrective management actions following its recommendations.

This course is also available in French. Ce cours peut également être animé en français.

This is part of our training on Project Cycle Management, which provides a solid foundation on the three following core subjects:

- Needs Assessments in Emergency and Rehabilitation situations (5 days)
- Planning, Programming and Monitoring Projects (5 days)
- Evaluating Projects (3 days)

Participants obtain a certificate in Project Cycle Management after attending the three courses. Each of these courses covers one main subject and can also be taken individually, leading to a course certificate. For more information about Project Cycle Management, please see the overview of courses.

Who should attend

The application to the course is open to candidates who have previously followed the module on Planning, Programming and Monitoring Projects (5 days). Exceptionally, and conditioning to the approval of the NGO Management School, the course is also open to participants with advanced project management skills.

This course is recommended for:
