Date: October 2nd–4th, 2024
Venue: Strathmore University, Nairobi, Kenya
Organisers: Strathmore University and NGO Management Association

For three impactful days, non-profit leaders, social entrepreneurs, and policy experts gathered to exchange ideas, challenge old paradigms, and shape the future of locally led, sustainable, and high-impact development. This wasn’t just another conference—it was a catalyst for change.
Day 1: Localisation – Shifting Power to Local Communities
The workshop opened with a deep dive into the PBO Act 2013, a game-changing policy shaping Kenya’s non-profit sector. What does it mean for financial sustainability? How does it ensure accountability? These were the hard-hitting questions tackled by panelists.
More than just policy talk, the real highlight of the day was the discussion on localisation—how organisations can move away from top-down approaches and truly empower local communities to take ownership of development.
One participant reflected on how this shift is already making a difference:
"...This conference gave me fresh insights on how to better align my work with locally-led, impactful initiatives." – David Hillary Onditi, Nairobi Baptist Church (Kenya)
Day 2: Sustainability – Can Profit and Purpose Coexist?
The second day sparked lively debates on how social enterprises can balance profitability with long-term sustainability. Participants explored cutting-edge innovations in green initiatives, social impact business models, and public-private partnerships that are reshaping both urban and rural communities across Kenya.
In working groups, attendees tackled real-world challenges:
How do we design sustainability projects that drive real impact?
How can organisations move beyond short-term funding cycles?
What does it take to create long-lasting, community-driven solutions
The key takeaway? Profit and purpose don’t have to be at odds—they can fuel each other.
Day 3: Partnerships – The Secret to Scalable Impact
The final day was all about collaboration—because no organisation can do it alone. Experts and practitioners shared powerful stories of strategic partnerships that had transformed their work, from large-scale infrastructure projects to grassroots-led initiatives.
Panelists broke down:
How to build win-win partnerships that go beyond funding relationships.
How to measure impact effectively, ensuring transparency and accountability.
How to create a culture of trust among donors, governments, and local organisations.
By the end of the day, one thing was clear: the future of non-profits and social enterprises lies in partnerships that are equitable, transparent, and built for the long term.

Beyond the Workshop: A Thriving Community of Practice
Great conversations shouldn’t end when the event does. That’s why we launched the Impact Forum for Non-Profits and Social Entrepreneurs in Kenya—a Community of Practice designed to keep the momentum going through peer learning, collaboration, and real-time problem-solving.
Hosted on WhatsApp Community, this forum is already thriving, with dedicated groups on Localisation, Sustainability, and Partnership Development. Since its launch, members have engaged in webinars, working groups, and ongoing discussions—turning insights into actionable change.
Looking Ahead: From Conversation to Transformation
We invite all change-makers to be part of this movement. If you’re committed to driving social impact, strengthening local leadership, and building sustainable partnerships, join us in shaping the future.
